There are two options for getting a GS1 barcode. One is to purchase directly from GS1. This option provides a code that is totally unique to the manufacturer.

The second option is to purchase a GS1 certified barcode from a reseller. Many retailers, especially smaller retailers may be using older inventory systems that only allow them to enter only 12 digit UPC numbers and not a 13 digit string.
