There are sins for which there is no forgiveness, neither in this world nor in the world to come. There are sins which utterly and completely preclude the sinner from gaining eternal life. Alma identified denying the Holy Ghost as the most abominable sin. The key to these requirements appears to be the power of the priesthood. An individual must bear and be a partaker of the priesthood and then defy that power.

Once individuals deny the Holy Ghost, the penalty is final. For a sin to be unpardonable, it must be of such a nature that it would not be covered by the atoning blood of the Savior, nor could the personal suffering of the sinner pay the price for the broken law. All other sins can be covered by either of these methods and, therefore, are pardonable. In relationship with the sin against the Holy Ghost, this apparently refers to those who have so rebelled against the Savior that they seek after the blood of Christ and if possible would shed his blood anew.
Because the sin against the Holy Ghost is unpardonable, no redemption will be made through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Therefore, no glory will be inherited by these people. If they have lived on this earth and have received a mortal body, they shall come forth in the last resurrection with an immortal body; but that body will not be glorified.
Only those who commit this sin will know the nature of this torment and its duration:. The end thereof, neither the place thereof, nor their torment, no man knows; neither was it revealed, neither is, neither will be unto man, except to them who are made partakers thereof;. However, it is important to note that although no human knows the eternal state of these people, it would be incorrect to teach that there is possible redemption for them at some future time.

Denying the Holy Ghost is an unpardonable sin, thus differing in a key aspect from the sin of murder by the shedding of innocent blood. In this dispensation, the Lord gave further insight on the eternal condition of those members of the Church who commit murder. The term toevah and its plural, toevot occurs times in the Hebrew Bible, and almost always has the connotation of a non-Israelite cultic practice.
In the Torah, the primary toevah is avodah zara , foreign forms of worship, and most other toevot flow from it. The Israelites are instructed not to commit toevah because other nations do so. Deuteronomy makes this quite clear:. When you come into the land that YHVH your God gives you, do not learn to do the toevot of those nations.
Do not find among you one who passes his son or daughter through the fire; or a magician; or a fortune teller, charmer, or witch… because all who do these things are toevah to YHVH and because of these toevot YHVH your God is driving them out before you.
So, toevah is serious, but it is serious as a particular class of cultic offense: a transgression of national boundary. Toevah is used four times in Leviticus 18—once to refer to male homosexual acts, and then three times as an umbrella term.
The term is repeated with reference to homosexual activity in Lev. Similarly, the Books of Kings and Chronicles use toevah nine times to refer to acts that other nations did in the Land of Israel:. In all these cases, toevah refers to a foreign cultic behavior wrongly practiced by Israelites and Israelite kings. And likewise, the prophet Ezekiel uses the term toevah a record-setting 39 times to refer to idolatry Ez. In one extended passage Ez. This extended passage, with six mentions of toevah, links the term in every instance with avodah zara , or idolatry.
Now, so far, it is unclear whether a toevah is detestable because it is foreign, or foreign because it is detestable.
This question is resolved elsewhere in the Bible, because Israelites are not the only ones with toevot. There are several examples of things which are toevah for Egyptians but perfectly acceptable for Israelites.
Genesis states that eating with Israelites is toevah for Egyptians. Toevah can also mean other things. It can refer to ritual imperfection: Deut.
Remarriage i. The sole ethical use of the term in the Torah is in Deut. In the Book of Proverbs which comes late in the Bible but which scholars believe to have been composed prior to the Deuteronomic and Levitical material , toevah is used twenty-one times to refer to various ethical failings, including the ways, thoughts, prayers and sacrifices of the wicked Prov. Similarly, Prov. Finally, other books of the Bible adapt the meaning of toevah in accord with their overall literary agendas.
Isaiah uses it to refer to the sacrifices of hypocrites , , as a taunt against earthly power , and idolatry Jeremiah associates toevah with idolatry Jer. Even these variant uses, in most cases, point to the nature of toevah as something foreign or, more generally, something which is or ought to be far away from oneself.
The KJV uses the word twenty-six times to refer to sheketz , an analogous term to toevah which refers usually to idolatry and occasionally to other taboos such as forbidden animals Lev. But in common parlance, the term has come to mean much more than that. The term implies that homosexuality has no place under the sun despite its presence in over animal species , and that it is an abomination against the Divine order itself.
In fact, toevah is mostly about idolatry, and male homosexual behavior is only as abominable as remarriage or not keeping kosher.
It conveys the culturally relative nature of toevah, has some connotation of foreignness, and rightly aligns the taboo against homosexuality with taboos against, for example, eating unkosher food. It also has a vaguely archaic feel, which it should.
Yet the word has, by now, entered the common parlance, and in that general sense, it matches toevah fairly well. Alternatively, we could stick with the Hebrew term, the foreignness of which heightens the foreignness of the biblical concerns about homosexuality.

What a great article on the probable meanings of the original Hebrew word and the incorrect use of abomination in English translations. Even now, more up-to-date translations than the KJV seem to refuse to re-examine the original Hebrew words and simply replace the word abomination with slightly updated but similar meaning words. I am no Hebrew scholar but I have read a number of explanations on the word toevah. I shall be keeping a record of this link as I feel certain that I can refer to this text in future discussions.

You are a crazy man. When the Israelites left pagan Egypt after spending hundreds of years there and are going to create their own new nation, God lays out His requirements in a detailed manner. Only a short time later, they not only create a golden calf to worship, but also engage in a sexual orgy of worship—and God strongly punishes them for it.
The reasons go even deeper than just diverging from pagan practices, though. From beginning to end of the bible, God frequently calls false religions or Israel turning to pagan worship as playing the harlot and committing adultery. Is this just an overly dramatic figure of speech used in the New Testament? On the contrary— these sins illustrate the root of how God views His relationship with His chosen people, not only in ancient Israel but under the new covenant as well.
In the first few chapters of the bible when there is only one human being, God creates Eve as a helpmeet, defines and commands marriage between the man and the woman, and declares it good.
The Old Testament is the story of His covenant with a physical nation, and of their eventual downfall due to their inability to be faithful to Him. The New Testament is the story of His chosen bride, how He develops a relationship with her, commits Himself to her, and ultimately builds a family with her. In the last few chapters of the book of Revelation, we see the long-awaited marriage of Christ and His bride, the church. Does that sound like something God has softened on? The entire bible is the story of a marriage and the creation of a family.
The book literally begins and ends with a marriage, and in the interim He defines for us what that means. Sometimes the unity of the church is destroyed by men who introduce things into its work and worship which are unauthorized.
